A woodworker creates a floating sculpture of a mug that is filled with “liquefied” colored pencils

A wonderful floating sculpture

Colored Pencils Sculpture by Bobby Duke

Bobby Duke, a woodworker and YouTube celebrity from Texas, specializing in hand-carved granite and wooden statues. Duke’s most recent invention is an optically deceptive hovering mug artwork that appears to be spewing liquid colored pencils. The “fluid” in the cup is formed from thousands of Crayola colored pencils that have been bonded together again and polished into a streaming pattern that falls to form a “bang” at the bottom. The mug is deftly made from a single piece of hardwood. The item has a stunning liquid shimmer thanks to a transparent plastic coating.

Each item Duke creates is documented on clip, which he then distributes with his over 250,000 Youtube views. Duke has a somewhat darker side that is evident in his films notwithstanding his expert modeling abilities. Duke says in the introduction to his Flying Cup Pencil Carving clip, “In this clip, we venture yet into further my warped mind and good sense of humour.” From Duke’s humorous over-excitement when buying wood to his obvious madness when his wild notion becomes a fact, the movie walks the spectator through the overall process.

The last item is presently back on the market on eBay, with 10% of the winning bid benefiting to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. You can visit Duke on YouTube and Instagram to see more of his work (and his good sense of humour).
