What a wonderful sculptures made of glass
Australian sculptor Clare Belfrage has been producing magnificent recycled glass artworks that are influenced by the natural environment for over 30 years. Her unusually formed sculptures distinguish out for the patterns and designs that float over their natural shapes. They have curved sides and relaxing primary colours. Glass strands are used to “paint” every one of these ephemeral patterns, which are then polished until they blend in with the artwork as a whole.
She wraps her artworks in a variety of methods, including strips of various colours, pieces cut into circles, and grids composed of gently curved white lines. The basic minimalism of the architectural design contrasts with the captivating designs, adding depth to the image. Belgrage wants to create without planning and instead goes with her gut. According to her statement on My Contemporary Met, “When captivated by the natural universe, the unfailing source of support for my art, half of my feeling of amazement is the study of Time – the way Time is defined, measured, and kept.” It can seem sped up, thick with power, frozen or caught, brief or unending, packed with energy, etc.
In her glass works, Belfrage aims to imitate some of these rhythmic patterns discovered in environment. Her artworks also convey a sensation of motion by having lines and patterns running across them that cause the user’s eyes to travel around the work. The organic patterns that she observes and strives to include into her creations “sign out motion through Time, proof of the life that is lived, indicating development, ageing, shedding, charting and connecting,” she adds.
