Wonderful “staircase to heaven”
Do you have a fear of heights? You could be inclined to take this stairway to the top if you don’t. Staircase to Paradise is an ephemeral sculpture made by South African landscape sculptor Strijdom van der Merwe that resembles an unending set of stairs that ascends to the heavens. The optical illusion becomes apparent, though, when the visitor approaches the artwork from an unique viewpoint. This object is really a 4.5-meter (14.8-foot) tall vertical staircase.
A comparable statue by Van der Merwe from 2016 was altered to produce a special work for the 2021 Nanhui Art Installation in Taitung County, Taiwan. Fourteen designers who built outdoor works were featured in the group show. Every artwork was shown beside the 4 districts’ and clans’ natural settings in Nanhui. “Sicevudan Forward From Here” served as the theme for 2021. The Paiwan word sicevudan means both “origin” and “integration.” In this instance, the artists looked at how art may inspire individuals to go over their differences.
To create Staircase to Paradise, Van der Merwe collaborated with Taiwanese sculptor Chou Sheng-hsien. Sheng-hsien created the sculpture by hand using steel rectangular tubing and Van der Merwe’s idea sketches and instructions. The finished piece invites visitors to engage with the framework in various ways and to consider the deceptive visual effect.
