Wonderful hand-carved stones
Although the surfaces of stones aren’t precisely the most pliable, José Manuel Castro López’s artwork may persuade you differently. He sculpts actual rocks such that they appear to have supple, fabric-like wrinkles and folds. The astounding illusion conveys López’s awe and respect for his material. According to López, “My contact with the rock is not only tactile but also mystical.” “They show up, they follow me, and we communicate well.”
The skilled artist constantly considers the organic texture of the rock before he begins cutting, beginning with common bits of quartz or stone. López says, “I adapt to its core. I make use of its advantages and work to maximise their effectiveness. He uses rock to fashion amazingly fluid shapes, but he also always takes care to preserve the stone’s inherent grain. He explains, “I take away where it needs to take away and I leave where it needs to be left.” “And I use textures and oxides to erase the tool’s imprint.” The ensuing rock statues have the appearance of having been sculpted by humanity’s greatest components rather than by humans.
