Marble sculptures like pillows
Fine art has long been distinguished by marble statue. Michelangelo and Bernini, among other Renaissance and Baroque artists, demonstrated their command of the material by transforming the unyielding rock into delicate patterns akin to fabric and skin. The tradition is continued by contemporary artist Hkon Anton Fagers with his lifelike depictions of things, animals, and humans.
Down, part of his ongoing series, depicts the worn-in, lived-in look of fluffy cushions. These sculptures, with their distinctive pursed curves, resemble the pleasant appearance of pillows that have just been slept on. This focus on detail, in each of the distinct folds and the shadows those creases cast, is how Fagers manages to still time. Every artwork is distinctive because to the way the creases are arranged since pillows, like many soft textiles, alter with every touch.
According to this, Fagers gives his depictions of humans the same level of attention. He painstakingly shapes the facial characteristics and textures the hair to give the marble the appearance of velvety skin. It reminds me of classical art from many centuries ago. In order to make items and artworks with human figures, Fager’s also creates even smaller things in the shape of various types of moths. These flying bugs are spread out on a sizable marble slab for the observer to see the design of their wings and antennas.
