Sculptures like individuals shaping their ideal bodies into reality
Mexican artist Victor Hugo Yáez Pia is renowned for his amazing bronze, wax, and plastic realistic statues. His latest book examines how autonomy might help you forget your own path. The sculpture, named Self-Made Man, depicts a masculine individual using a hammer and chisel, two conventional statue instruments, to cut out his idealised shape from a bigger body.
Pia’s work is distinctive for its use of an autonomous figure who is making the decision for himself and the given instruments to do so, unlike many realistic statues from the history of art that investigate the beauty of an “ideal” human shape. Brazilian designer Gabriel D’Orazio developed a virtual work that resembles a marble statue to further investigate this topic.
Pia created a similar statue of a woman carrying out the same function after finishing the Self-Made Man. She is pictured midway through her labour, just like her male equivalent, before utilising a chisel and hammer to finish the remaining of her body’s sculpture. The Self-Made Man weighs around 22 pounds (10 kg), while the Self-Made Woman is roughly 1.6 feet (50 cm) tall.
