An ancient breed of a dog
Even the list of fragile animals is expanding, and it seems that even supposedly extinct animals have been revived.
The unusual elderly canine species hasn’t been spotted outside in 50 years, but this time it did.
The New Guinea whistling dog was thought to be extinct, and it took researchers more than 50 years to find it.
The scientists were shocked to discover these canines in some remote areas of Papua, Indonesia, with only a small number of them being kept in captivity.
These dogs, who are mostly related to dingoes, are renowned for their unusual and melodic howl.
The New Guinea Highland Stray Dog Association led an investigation in 2016 and found a family of 15 stray dogs close to a mining operation.
A few years ago, the research team returned to collect genetic material and geographic data from this group in an effort to link it to the captive singing dogs.
They shared more than 70% of the same chromosomes, proving that they are very close relatives.
“They seem to be most closely related to a group of developmental biology New Guinea whistling dogs that were descended from 8 dogs brought to the U.S. many, many, many years ago.
Elaine Ostrander, a co-founder of the subject and professor at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, said CNN.
