Sculptures with women appearence
The evocative statues by French artist Valérie Hadida depict the experiences of women. The sculptures are metal images of young and older women seated in various poses, each with a unique look on their face and corresponding body posture and hairstyle. Some seem reflective, while others seem at ease. The variations highlight how no two travels are the similar, yet just like their kneaded surfaces, the figures emerge with visible scars, ultimately making them stronger.
The women in Hadida’s life have a significant impact on her writing. Hadida says My Contemporary Met that the women that always motivate her include „moms, daughters, siblings, pals, best mates, guardians,“ and they come from all eras.
Even though all of Hadida’s statues are cast in metal with a green patina, they are all originally created as clay statues, which accounts for every figure’s beautiful curves and hand-smoothed appearance. She says, „Find the contour and the outline of the profile, through opposing volumes, when I begin a new work in clay, I want to put my energies on the big lines.“ She is able to let her artistic side run wild here. „I am at home with clay. It is not my style to carve rock or wood since the ideation process involves too much expectation. I really enjoy letting my creative side run wild. Free!”
