Dragons often only appear in fairy tales or science fiction movies, but in the French city of Calais, a massive, fire-breathing monster prowls the roads. But don’t panic, this specific dragon isn’t genuine. La Machine, a non-profit company made up of artists, technologists, and theatrical architects that collaborate to build grand mechanical creatures, produced the artificial Dragon of Calais (Le Dragon de Calais).
The enormous dragon is La Machine’s biggest invention to date. It is constructed of wood and steel carvings. It was mechanically propelled by 17 people daily earlier this month (November 1-3) while it marched around the roads of Calais as part of an artists event. As the mythological monster stamped through the roads and blew out blazing smoke, throngs of people watched in awe. The creators claim that the Dragon of Calais is moving toward the city after being let free from the underground regions. This unique creation made by La Machine Company will wander the city while being controlled by 17 people.
The Dragon of Calais is currently housed at La Cité provisoire, where starting on December 17th, members of the public can enjoy carriage rides on the back of the dragon through the city to experience the same sense of power as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones.
