Sculptures of aquatic life
Artist Lisa Stevens from Bristol makes stunning porcelain pieces that appear to have blown up on the shore. These works, generally created in a variety of vivid colors and embellished with small seashell-like features, are influenced by natural designs seen in environment, especially those seen in or around the water.
Stevens uses dough to create her captivating works, and she uses a variety of tools from her toolbox to carve and mold the countless holes and minute ridges that make up the fascinating designs. By doing this, she produces waves, swirls, and blooms that have an alluring haptic appeal. While the majority of these items are modeled on the shapes of plates and cutlery, some of them have massive three-dimensional protuberances that reach well beyond the mould, while others were carved into giant-spiked shells or squares.
Lichen, ocean life, moss, and other plant products serve as an inspiration for these highly inventive sculptures. Stevens employs vibrant color palettes with an emphasis on oranges, greens, and blues when she decides to glaze her completed ceramic pieces, emphasizing these inspirations. Those that aren’t colored instead draw attention to the architectural elements embellishing the clay’s surface.
