Cutting boards made of wood and resin

Using beautiful plastic paintings, Liverpool, Britain designer Kate Chesters makes handcrafted wooden chopping boards. Every distinctive design gets to the heart of naturalistic environments and is found in the environment. Chesters uses a wide range of plastic colors that nicely blend together just to produce spectacular hybrids of colour and design, from cloud-like fuchsia spirals to sea azure. I have always been interested and mesmerised by the sky and sunlight, and it is my goal to produce paintings that represent the amazement sensation that a spectacular environment evokes, the artist says.

Chesters crafts her handcrafted boards from a range of untreated, liquid timbers over the course of days. Every primitive block has its own distinct qualities and appearance, from the olive diamond’s oil-like texture designs to the simple, striped marks of bamboo wood. Chesters first uses a length of tape to establish a neat line across the panel and covers the remaining wood with cling film before spraying the non-toxic epoxy glue. After that, she applies her vibrant glazes to the lit areas and observes how a chemical process combines the colours into asymmetrical designs. Every board has to cure after completion for about 24-72 hours.

The designer admits, “I always have a strategy in mind whenever I produce my art. I am aware of the colours I’ll use, the kinds of colors and forms I’ll make, and the atmosphere I want to evoke. Nevertheless, I have some limited control over the precise end outcome of how the board will appear.

The final surface is incredibly adaptable and durable once the resin has transformed from tacky to clean and gleaming. Chesters’ designs come in a range of sizes and colors, and they can be used to distribute cheese and bread, chop and make meals, or simply spruce up your kitchen with a modern touch!
