From blocks of raw wood, ethereal sleeping figures gracefully emerge

Ethereal sleeping sculptures

Figurative Wooden Sculptures by Akiko Mimasu

Akiko Mimasu’s paintings include ghostly figures that appear to be made of big chunks of wood. On top of lengthy pieces of wood, the Japanese artist grinds serene, dozing faces that individually seem to be snugly encased within the wooden log.

These napping characters are resting peacefully within the wooden block and are wearing plush accessories. With eyes closed and a beautiful, sympathetic look, each face is expertly sculpted. Others have 1 or 2 two hands curled all around top of the lumber, whereas others are entirely engrossed in the raw product.

Mimasu’s motivation for designing these intriguing characters is difficult to understand. Nevertheless, one view can show a coexisting harmony among people and the natural world. The faces of the characters are painstakingly sculpted to conceal the tree’s organic roughness, while the remainder of the medium is left unprocessed.
