From Blocks of Raw Wood, Ethereal Sleeping Figures Gracefully Emerge

Wonderful ethereal figures

Figurative Wooden Sculptures by Akiko Mimasu

Akiko Mimasu’s artwork features ethereal figures that arise from huge chunks of wood. On top of lengthy pieces of wood, the Japanese artist carves serene, dozing faces that individually seem to be snugly encased within the wooden block.

These napping characters are resting peacefully within the wooden block and are wearing plush equipment. A young, delicate look with eyes closed can be seen on every carefully carved face. Many have 1 or 2 hands curled all around head of the lumber, whereas others are entirely engrossed in the core material.

Mimasu’s motivation for designing these intriguing characters is difficult to understand. Nevertheless, one view can show a coexisting harmony among people and the natural world. The faces of the characters are painstakingly sculpted to conceal the tree’s organic roughness, while the remainder of the medium is left unprocessed.
