Giant sculptures of trolls
Trolls frequently appear as the antagonist or instigator in fanciful stories, but this is not the situation in the works of sculptor Thomas Dambo. The globe’s woodlands and other places are home to the enormous magnificent creatures that the Danish artist creates. The good-natured animals are constructed from waste materials like twigs and reclaimed wood. Although they are frequently made of tough materials, they have a suppleness to them. They charm people with their lovely smiles and kind gaze.
It requires a group to construct Dambo’s trolls, which may reach heights of 30 meters. A band of neighbourhood residents who are suitable candidates will bind the many parts that make up one figure after he builds the statue’s framework. Dambo has found that shipping pallets are one of its most able to demonstrate the ability because they are readily available and frequently abandoned. This was formerly meant for a dump, but the sculptor has turned it into a defender of the environment by “reorganising other people’s rubbish,” as he puts it.
Dambo draws inspiration for his figures from the setting in which they will be developed. A troll named Isak Heartstone was influenced by Colorado’s industrial heritage while he was in Breckenridge. Isak Heartstone was seen stacking rocks while seated on the floor, saying that he was “working to make a new small hill because he’s upset the other hill has been broken down.” Once finished, the troll gained a lot of popularity and had to be taken down since so many people tried to hike up to him for photos.
The notion that spectators would feel obliged to trek to a location or, at the at minimum, go out of their way to discover the troll, regardless of Isak Heartstone’s untimely passing, points to a larger aim that Dambo has for his works. He hopes that people will appreciate both his statues and the natural environment that these larger-than-life creatures occupy. Perhaps, if they are informed that these locations remain, they will make a greater effort to defend them, just like the trolls did.
