Wonderful bird nests

Giant Nest Sculptures by Charlie Baker

Of course, most kids want to live in a treehouse, but what about a massive bird’s nest? Charlie Baker, a Brooklyn-based sculptor, uses enormous artworks and installations to capture the untamed magnificence of twigs and sticks. Each one has a captivating weave constructed of materials collected from the environment.

To create his nest artworks, Baker uses wood from the Long Island woodlands. In his words to My Contemporary Met, “I appreciate the feeling of movement the curving elements generate as, to me, it provides a sense that the sculpture is living, developing.” The majority of these artworks are placed in various settings where they blend in with their surroundings. To achieve the form he desires, the sculptor will adjust and bend his components as needed.

“I am continuously thinking about how my sculptures fit in with environment and how they relate to their environment. It’s the same with my paintings,” he adds. “Rather than painting or applying additional coatings to raw materials such as metal, wood, and rock when I’m creating a sculpture or a place, I enjoy working with their inherent colours and patterns.”

Baker, a native of New York, trained in natural stone and carpentry in addition to studying outdoor spaces at the New York Botanical Garden. After that, he started Baker Buildings, a design and construction business that focuses on “wonderful outdoor encounters.” Here are more of Baker’s amazing wooden creations; to keep up to date with his newest works, visit the designer on Insta.
