Illusionistic sculptures investigate how people and nature interact

Fantasstic sculptures

There is much more to Christopher David White’s art than first meets the eye. His fantastical statues initially give the impression of being painstakingly crafted from hardwood. But take another look. The sculptures are created from clay rather than wood. White is able to effectively sculpt the human figure such that it appears to have been carved and whittled away from a piece of wood rather than being constructed from the ground up by accurately reproducing the texture and pattern of the timber (even as its knots).

White uses impressionist paintings to make a striking point about where people fit into the larger scheme of things. He claims that “man is to environment as skin is to bark—as roots are to veins.” “Civilization and the natural environment are intimately interwoven. From the small to the big, from our DNA to the universe, our natural processes are mirrored across the cosmos. However, we have put up barriers to keep ourselves from environment. We have set ourselves up in conflict with the world that provides for us. We are no longer a part of anything that defines who we are.

White has produced ceramic works that examine our relationship with the natural world and how it all we do impacts the delicate balance between mankind and the nature since we last admired his work. A key component of their idea is clay. The artist makes use of its capacity to resemble a variety of items, especially when it comes to the concept of fantasy.

“The world that humans have made is the real fantasy. It is a life that aspires to be independent of nature, says White. The contrast of organic and inorganic aspects, together with the fudging of size, proportion, and substance, contributes to the differ and compels the spectator to examine more closely at both the outside and the inside of the work.

His fantasy statues are made of ceramic, yet they appear to be made of wood.

Heavily influencing his work’s theoretical element is illusion.

“The world that humans have made is the real illusion. It is a life that tries to cut itself off from the natural world.
