Dan Medina, a sculptor, started his day on January 26 at 4:30 a.m. He unpacked his 160-pound metal monument and set off on his own to place it in the Calabasas mountains. From dawn until dusk, his magnificent memorial to Kobe Bryant and his child Gianni “Gigi” stood there and surveyed the surroundings. Medina wanted to make a point on the second anniversary of the chopper crash that killed them and 7 other people.
He thinks that by bringing his bronze statue to the scene of the crash, which has since become a makeshift monument, he may begin a conversation with authorities about possibly locating the artwork there forever. The scene shows Kobe tenderly encircling Gigi as they exchange loving looks. A sport, a tribute to both Gigi’s participation in sports and Kobe’s success, is placed under her arm.
Medina overcame difficulties like his waggon failing midway through the journey and spent 90 minutes dragging the artwork up the slope. He persisted, carrying every item by itself, knowing that Kobe would have instructed him to do so.
Even though Medina admitted she wasn’t the greatest fan of the sport she had ever met, Kobe was more important to her than basketball. He had a high level of intelligence, was multilingual, and loved to read. Because of the way he spoke, some people I have met claimed that he might have been their children’s father figure or protector.
Medina felt it was crucial to remember every victim of the horrific disaster, which happened when the pilot lost his bearings in the fog and slammed into a mountain. The incident resulted in the deaths of all guests, such as the pilot. On the sculpture’s pedestal, Medina engraved the words “Stars come and go, but Heroes are immortal,” along with the names of each victim.
Supporters took pictures with the monument as many paid their tributes during the day. Observing how his art affected others was an intense experience for Medina. I’ve held so many crying modern parents, he remarked.
The existence sculpture is another project being worked on by the Southern California-based artist, who hopes to have it placed in l.a.. Till then, he is hopeful that the publicity surrounding his impulsive effort to build the monument will inspire government representatives to approach him about providing the artwork a fixed, prominent location.
On the anniversary of their passing, Dan Medina’s poignant tribute to Kobe and Gianna Bryant was unveiled.
