Wonderful artworks
Ben Young, a graphic designer, has a strong affinity for the sea. He has spent decades near the water because he was raised in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. He started out as a ship maker but later switched to artwork. He was well-served by the process-oriented career; today, as an artist, he employs a captivating fusion of crystal and concrete to produce pieces that evoke the rich richness of the ocean while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic to respect his chosen materials.
In the past, we have admired Young’s work. His glass artworks frequently feature iron figures or other little sea-related objects like ships or coconut palms. But as he builds up his body of work, his statues start to take on an unearthly quality. Concrete hills are broken up by spherical glass as if the blue substance were a huge globe on some other planet. The uncharted territories are consistent with Young’s body of work as a whole, but it seems like we’re going farther from the coast as he experiments with fresh concepts and works to hone his visual vocabulary.
