The relationship between people and nature
The Morton Arboretum’s art gallery by South African sculptor Daniel Popper is growing. From 2021 and running through 2023, his Human+Nature show has been on view at the 1,700-acre park. Popper has added 3 more statues, bringing the total of pieces to nine, to what’s already his biggest display to date when it first debuted.
Popper’s intention to evoke wonder when he joins humans and plants is continued in the 3 original artworks. It’s a great ideal that builds on The Morton Arboretum’s efforts to support tree health and raise awareness of their significance. Additionally, it is appropriate that the artworks will be delivered in 2022, the arboretum’s centenary year. In reality, Popper’s shortest of the 3 original artworks was made specifically to mark this important moment.
This artwork, Ginkgo, serves as a lovely welcome for tourists and will remain outside of the welcome center. Ginkgo branches frame the lady’s mask-like face in the artwork, which is a lovely illustration of the range of species that can be seen on the land. It is only fitting that this majestic tree be utilized in the artwork honoring the longevity of the arboretum given creator Jay Morton’s affection for it. There are approximately 56 varieties and 77 examples of ginkgo plants in the collection, and there have been many ginkgo fruiting trees on the property.
Mycelia and Ephemera, two of Popper’s other artworks, honor more fungal and sparse vegetation that visitors can find there. He gives us the opportunity to reflect on how interrelated the natural environment is and how we fit into it in this way. Ephemera is situated in a field, but Mycelia emerges in a remote forest. This placement just deepens the significance of the piece and gives the experience of searching for Popper’s artwork a feeling of a scavenger hunt.
One of the reasons for visiting The Morton Arboretum, which is situated from outside Chicago, is Popper’s improved version of Human+Nature. The 8 works will be on display till March 2023.
